Windshields are crucial for the maintenance of the structural integrity of your vehicle and the protection of the passengers. While you may take great care of your car and windshield, it may eventually face damage. If the glass is damaged, the safety of the driver and passengers will be compromised as this situation poses a hazard for road users. However, some types of damage should not be ignored because they need the immediate attention of an auto repair expert. Read on to learn more.

Stress and Floater Cracks

Windshield stress and floater cracks appear as small, straight lines whose start and end points you can see. In some cases, they may have branches protruding from the main line. The reasons for the formation of cracks vary. For example, stress and floater cracks are caused by extreme temperature fluctuations.

These cracks can be especially dangerous if they form on the driver's side of the windshield as they may interfere with the driver's line of vision and lead to a collision or crash. Furthermore, every state has its own regulations regarding windshield damage. So, you may be issued a ticket if the patrol officer determines that the cracks are obstructing your view.

Windshield Chips, Dings, and Stars

Chips are caused by flying rocks that hit the glass and take a piece of it. On the other hand, stars are chips with cracks radiating from their center, resulting in something that looks like a star. If the damage caused by the chip is not extensive or does not penetrate through the windshield, a glass technician can fill it in and stabilize it to prevent any further damage. The technician can also repair stars, but they may still be slightly visible.

However, in the case of bigger stars or dings, the treatment may be different. You may need a specialist to repair the windshield as a little pressure could completely take it down.

Edge Cracks

Edge cracks start near the edge of the glass and end at the edge as a result of increased pressure on the diameter of the perimeter. These cracks spread effortlessly even under little pressure, so repairs are crucial. If the cracks are extensive, you may need windshield replacement.

Bullseye Cracks

Bullseye cracks resemble the bullseye in a dartboard with an impact point and a circular shape. This type of crack is a result of a direct impact on the glass on both large and small objects.

This type of damage may be quick to spread in the face of further pressure or impact and impede your line of vision. If the crack is less than an inch long, not directly in the driver's vision line, and there is no dirt or debris in the bullseye, you may consider repair. However, if the damage is extensive, you may benefit from windshield replacement.

Combination Cracks

Combination breaks are a combination of two different crack types that are connected to each other. For example, an edge crack combined with a bullseye is a combination crack. These cracks are severe and interfere with the structural integrity of the windshield.

Due to the severity of these cracks, the windshield may need replacement instead of repair. Furthermore, you need to involve your auto glass expert as soon as possible as the glass could compromise your safety should it break unexpectedly.
