Chip Repair vs. Full Windshield Replacement: How to Know Which One You Need

You're in the driveway, coffee in hand, and you spot it: a chip or crack in your windshield. Your first question is almost certainly "do I need a full replacement, or can this be repaired?" It's a fair question — and the answer has a real impact on your time, your wallet, and your safety.

The good news is there's a clear, logical way to figure it out. This guide walks you through the four factors that determine repairability, a simple decision tree you can apply right now, and what happens if you wait too long to decide.

The Short Answer: Size, Location, Depth, and Age

Every auto glass technician assessing a chip or crack is looking at the same four things. Get these right and you'll know the answer before you even call a shop.

1. Size

This is the most straightforward factor. As a general rule:

  • A chip smaller than a quarter (about 1 inch in diameter) repairable in most cases
  • A crack shorter than 6 inches — often repairable, depending on the other factors below
  • A crack longer than 6 inches — replacement is typically required
  • A crack that runs across a significant portion of the windshield — always replacement

These are guidelines, not hard rules. A 5-inch crack in a bad location can still require replacement. A chip right at 1 inch may or may not be repairable depending on its type. That's where the other three factors come in.

2. Location

Where the damage sits matters as much as how big it is. There are two location concerns:

  • Driver's line of sight: Any damage that falls in the area directly in front of the driver — roughly the width of the steering wheel and centered on your eye level — typically requires replacement. Even after a successful repair, the resin can leave a slight optical distortion. That distortion in your peripheral vision is manageable; in your direct sightline, it's a safety issue.
  • Edge damage: Chips or cracks within 2 inches of the windshield's edge are structurally more serious. The edge is where the glass bonds to the frame, and damage there compromises the seal and the structural integrity of the windshield itself. Edge chips almost always require full replacement.

3. Depth

A windshield is made of two layers of glass bonded by a plastic interlayer (PVB). Chip repair works by injecting resin into the outer layer. If the damage has punched through to the inner glass layer or penetrated the PVB, repair is no longer an option — the structural compromise is too significant. You can't always tell depth by eye, but a technician can assess it in under a minute.

4. Age and Contamination

A fresh chip repaired within a few days has the best outcome. The longer a chip sits, the more dirt, moisture, and road debris work their way into the crack. Contaminated cracks don't bond as cleanly with repair resin, which can result in a visible repair or, worse, a repair that doesn't hold. In the Pacific Northwest especially — where rain is frequent in Portland, Salem, Seattle, and Vancouver WA — a chip can contaminate quickly. Act fast.

The Decision Tree: Walk Through Your Damage Now

Answer each question in order. Stop when you reach a clear outcome.

STEP 1 Is the crack or chip longer/wider than 6 inches?
→ YES: You need full windshield replacement. Damage this size cannot be reliably repaired.
→ NO: Continue to Step 2.
STEP 2 Is the damage directly in your line of sight while driving?
→ YES: Replacement is recommended. Repair resin can leave optical distortion in your sightline.
→ NO: Continue to Step 3.
STEP 3 Is the damage within 2 inches of the windshield's edge?
→ YES: Replacement is typically required. Edge damage compromises the frame seal and structural bond.
→ NO: Continue to Step 4.
STEP 4 Has the chip been sitting for more than a week, or is there visible dirt/moisture in the crack?
→ YES: Repair may still be possible but call a technician quickly — contamination reduces repair quality. A professional assessment is needed.
→ NO: You likely have a repairable chip. Book a repair as soon as possible before weather or further driving worsens it.

If you reached the bottom of the tree with all green answers, a chip repair is almost certainly the right — and much cheaper — call. If you hit a red box, plan for replacement. If you hit the yellow box, don't wait: call a technician today for an assessment.

What About Cost and Insurance?

Cost is often the deciding factor in people's minds, so it's worth being clear about what each option typically involves.

  • Chip repair: Generally, $60–$150 out of pocket. Many comprehensive insurance policies in Oregon and Washington cover chip repairs at no cost — no deductible — because paying for a repair is far cheaper for the insurer than a full replacement claim.
  • Full replacement: Typically, $200–$600+, depending on your vehicle make, model, and whether the windshield has embedded ADAS sensors or a heated element. Subject to your comprehensive deductible.

If you're unsure whether your policy covers it, don't guess — call us. We work directly with all major insurance carriers in Oregon and Washington and handle the insurance claim process from start to finish.

What Happens If You Wait?

This is the question most people don't ask until it's too late. A chip left untreated doesn't stay a chip. Here's the progression:

  1. Moisture enters the crack — especially common in rainy climates like Portland, OR and Seattle, WA
  2. Temperature changes (hot days, cold nights, or defrosting in winter) cause the glass to expand and contract, spreading the crack
  3. Vibration from road imperfections accelerates the spread
  4. What was a 1-inch repairable chip becomes a 4-inch crack, then an 8-inch crack that requires full replacement

The repair window is real. Most technicians agree you have the best outcome when a chip is addressed within the first few days. After a week in wet or variable weather, the contamination risk increases significantly. After a month, many chips that were once repairable have spread beyond repair range.
